Watercolor Birds, teen class

The last few classes the students have been focusing on drawing what they see. We divided our reference into quarters and used the same proportions to draw larger. They could only draw/see one quarter at a time. It was a great lesson on how to recognize and correct any off proportions. And then they used watercolor to paint. It was nice to see the students look at the details.

Museum Self Portraits, ages 10-12

I have seen some professional artists doing this type of painting and thought the students could do one of their own. They chose a famous painting and put themselves in as if they are viewing the painting in a  museum. They needed to keep in mind the appropriate frame, light source/shadow, flooring, posture, and favorite outfit... Every time we do this project the students hit a home run.

Butterflies and Bubblewrap, ages 7-10

This was a fun project that we worked on in layers. I am posting the younger class, ages 7-10, but you can imagine the wonderful results of the other classes too. Just lovely!

 and my example.

Mixed Up Dr Seuss Animals, ages 7-11

We talked about taking parts of different animals to combine to make a new one. We also looked at Dr Seuss's Zoo story and laughed at the combinations we found.

Tree colors, ages 10-12

We have done this project in the past and I wanted to repeat with this new group of students. It is a great project to learn/practice subtle color mixing. I will post more as I get them.

Night Paintings, teen class

I wanted the students to have a look at light at night and see the colors, shadows, glow... They chose their own reference photos and painted in acrylic on stretched canvas.

Pointillism Hearts, ages 7-10

A quick little project to celebrate Valentines Day.  Pointillism using colors, moving dark to light on the hearts and just a fun pattern for the background. Acrylic on stretched canvas. The students also made giant cut paper valentines that I forgot to photograph. And they were nice too.
