Picasso's Three Musician Paper Collage, ages 10-12

This is a favorite project that the students always do a fabulous job!
Cut paper on 11x17 inch board.

4 Words, Teen class

This was a thoughtful project. The students wrote 5 adjectives on a small piece of paper and put them in a hat/box. Then we mixed them up and they each took turns picking one till they were all gone. They could throw one word away which would leave them with 4. They had 4, 5x7 inch wooden raised panels to paint what each word might feel like in an image... but the catch was to use a common theme. We had weather, rain, lightbulbs, silhouettes and arrows... I will post them as they finish but here is the beginning.  Some of the words were stormy, loud, frenzy, luminous, hopeful, peaceful, mundane, utopian... Yes, this was a challenge with some great ideas in the end.

Contour and Shaded Pumkins and an Apple, ages 10-12

We looked at photos of pumpkins and talked about how to start a complicated drawing. We also noted that things get smaller in the distance. Using contour lines they drew their "map" of shapes and then chose three to color and shade.

Adult Class Woven Watercolor

I don't usually post the adult projects, but this one is too good not to share! It was a great project to do after summer break to loosen up a bit. We drew and painted two of the same image without too much worry if it matched up in size or color. Then we cut, wove and glued them on card stock. It was nice to see all the ways they played with backgrounds and some had a checkerboard effect, some were loose and impressionistic and all were so clever. I could imagine silk scarves or vintage fabric made from these. You can link on the names to see what these artists are up to.

Harvest Moon, ages 7-9

This is my example of the harvest moon paper project that the students used as inspiration for their own.
We took cake cardboard rounds (you could use clean pizza rounds too) to use as our moon. A little neon yellow marker gave the moon a bright color. Then the students made a list of things they could use in their projects and cut/glued them. Note the shy raccoon looking from behind the corn stalks.

Loose Watercolor and Ink Birds- teen class

Most of my students, ages 10 through adult have done this project. They all turned out so wonderful, even thought it was sometimes hard to paint ourtside of the lines. I am sharing some of the teen class work and mine at the end.

We will learn a watercolor technique for colorful fall trees and choose words to describe fall.

OCTOBER 11, from 6 to 8:30pm,   cost $35

Ages 8-12

We will use cut paper to decorate our Halloween moons.

Some pop ups and 3-d effects will be encouraged.

OCTOBER 18, from 6 to 8:30 pm,  cost $35

Ages 8-12

We will paint with acrylic paint on canvas board.

The students will draw the owl on a "season" tree.

They will use patterns and bright cheerful colors to finish.

The previous wet on wet watercolor technique will be revisited with a stained glass effect and tree shapes learned.

A favorite for sure.

Loose watercolor and ink birds, teen camp

This is just a few examples of the wonderful work the students did for this project. Loose watercolor with drips and splatters over penciled bird drawings and ink drawings over top. I wish I had taken more photos of the rest of the class.

Self portraits from the teen class in spring

I just found some photos of student work that I wanted to share.
I suggested to the students to do a self portrait using values (black and white) with a color pop.
One is done on full sheet watercolor paper with subtle green eyes and the other is acrylic on 16x20 canvas.

Cradled Wood Panel Project- camp age 11-14

We talked about "out of the box" to use as a design tool and how it can make a project interesting.
We looked at past projects and examples of uses in magazines, cards...
The wooden panels were a new surface for the class.

Textured acrylic, pen and ink birds- summer camp ages 11-14

We took some tissue paper and diluted modpodge to create at texture on canvas board. Then painted an loose acrylic background taking note of direction and movement we could crete with it. We traced the birds from drawings we made and then used pen and ink to complete the image. Wonderful job by all!
