Watecolors and ink, rhythm and patterns, teen class

I wanted to share a project the teen students did at the end of the year. We used a longer format watercolor paper and the students had to come up with a subject that twisted, interacted or looped together down the page. Then we added some diagonals so that the students could think of color or value changes for interest. Using white and black ink for patterns and textures was the icing on the cake. What a wonderful job they all did!

Happy Halloween Haunted Houses, teen class

We talked about how different types of lines can give us a different feeling in our art projects. Curved lines are softer and friendlier. Jagged and angled lines can give a threatening feeling, feeling of height...
The students used their knowledge of lines and made some pretty creepy watercolor and ink houses.

Animals and Man, Teen class

We looked at some reference images of animals that had a human element and let our imaginations go wild. This is one of my favorite projects of the year! The students used ink (fine point sharpie) on 17 x 22 inch card stock.

Watercolor wash over ink, lighthouses - teen class

We have been talking about shading and how we can use ink to draw and shade an object. The students looked at some photos of lighthouses and took note of where the shadows and shapes were. They drew the shapes in pencil then went over the lines with ink. Watercolor washes were used to finish!

Loose Watercolor and Ink Birds- teen class

Most of my students, ages 10 through adult have done this project. They all turned out so wonderful, even thought it was sometimes hard to paint ourtside of the lines. I am sharing some of the teen class work and mine at the end.

Loose watercolor and ink birds, teen camp

This is just a few examples of the wonderful work the students did for this project. Loose watercolor with drips and splatters over penciled bird drawings and ink drawings over top. I wish I had taken more photos of the rest of the class.

Ink and Watercolor Washes, Teen Class

This is the first of the teen pen and ink over watercolor washes project to finish. I wanted the students to work on pen and ink textures and thought it would be more interesting over watercolor washes.
