I saw a demonstration online about an artist who uses white ink to create patterns on her paintings of birds. I showed my classes some of her examples and also talked about zentangles and looked at some books of patterns. I think my students totally got the lesson!
Most of my students, ages 10 through adult have done this project. They all turned out so wonderful, even thought it was sometimes hard to paint ourtside of the lines. I am sharing some of the teen class work and mine at the end.
This is just a few examples of the wonderful work the students did for this project. Loose watercolor with drips and splatters over penciled bird drawings and ink drawings over top. I wish I had taken more photos of the rest of the class.
The students used the tissue paper texture technique again and came up with some great projects. We used a calendar that I had in the studio as inspiration for the colorful birds.
We talked about texture and layering, multimedia and birds. We looked at different acrylic technique books and the students picked some that they liked. Some used their own poetry and some used tissue paper for texture and added drips and layers... Some found inspiration online for the birds and some used a calendar that I had in the studio. But all explored and came up with some fun combinations.
Today we talked about how in the past, before cameras, people had to draw to document things they saw, places they explored... We talked about botanical illustration, Audobon and explorers like Columbus, Louis and Clark... Then the students drew birds in oil pastel on 18x24 inch Canson Paper.
We looked at stained glass windows, (Tiffany...)and how to break things down to simple shapes. The students picked a bird to do and drew the shapes with marker. Then they painted the shapes using watercolors and wet on wet technique to have it look like colored glass. We had them matted to a 16 x 20 inch size.
