Observation Color Painting - Teen Class
Once the students finished the observation value paintings, we moved on to adding color. They used a limited palette of cad red light, yellow ochre, black and white. Yes, only these few colors. They had a good lesson in color mixing with lovely results!

Pumpkin Time - ages 7 - teens
This was a fun project we did in the student, teen and friday classes. Such a bright project to do as the days are getting shorter. Here are just a few of the examples showing nice texture and color transitions. Acrylic on 11x14 inch wrapped canvas.
Pumpkin Lessons- Teen Advanced
This is the advanced teen final pumpkin paintings using only red, yellow ochre, black and white acrylic paint on 10x14 canvas board. Yes, only 4 colors! It is a great lesson in really looking at values and color mixing without the distraction of many other colors. Please read below to see how they got to this level.

my 4 x 5 inch example
They started with a simple pencil drawing
and then did 2 small 5x7 inch value paintings.
They looked at the light bouncing back from the white table cloth, shadows and light direction...
There is a wonderful difference between the first and second painting.
The subject is more familiar so you can notice more of the light in the second painting.
The brushwork is also more confident.
Nice job!

Contour and Shaded Pumkins and an Apple, ages 10-12
We looked at photos of pumpkins and talked about how to start a complicated drawing. We also noted that things get smaller in the distance. Using contour lines they drew their "map" of shapes and then chose three to color and shade.

Pumpkins! ages 7 to 15
I like to do projects that reflect the time of year and so pumpkins have reappeared in our classroom. The students used 19x25 inch canson paper and oil pastels to draw and paint the pumpkins. I call it drawing when we use lines and painting with the oil pastels when we show value, color and texture. These all have nice rhythm and style.

Pumpkins!
Some of the students worked on observation, value and color choices.
First they did value drawings using cross hatching marks.
Then they did contour drawings with solid values.
Then they did contour drawings (again, 4 times!) on watercolor paper.
The first one was a value painting. The second one was done only using two colors.
The last two we will finish in class this week.
Stay tuned!
The last two on the bottom were done in watercolor again.
One was done using any colors to get a realistic effect. The last one was to use unexpected colors...
We then critiqued and talked about the different color options we have to choose from.
