Black Glue and Watercolor Owls, ages 9-11

I found a black glue, owl project online and just knew my students would have a great time with this.  They all did a wonderful job!

Pumpkin Lessons- Teen Advanced

This is the advanced teen final pumpkin paintings using only red, yellow ochre, black and white acrylic paint on 10x14 canvas board. Yes, only 4 colors! It is a great lesson in really looking at values and color mixing without the distraction of many other colors. Please read below to see how they got to this level.

They started with a simple pencil drawing 

and then did 2 small 5x7 inch value paintings.

They looked at the light bouncing back from the white table cloth, shadows and light direction...

There is a wonderful difference between the first and second painting.

The subject is more familiar so you can notice more of the light in the second painting.

The brushwork is also more confident.

Peacock Feathers- Teen Class

This was a great class in observation and planning a direction/movement in a painting. We had actual peacock feathers and photos to use a reference. Then the students did some thumbnails deciding on the direction and placement of the feather. Painted on 12x12 inch stretched canvas with acrylic paint.

A Few of My Favorite Things, ages 9-11

We talked about some of our favorite things and then the students chose a few to draw. They simplified the shapes, chose colors and patterns and then painted.

Colorful Animal Portraits, ages 7-11

The students picked a favorite animal photo and we drew the portrait in pencil. They looked for simple shapes and then filled in the detail. Then they took black crayon and shaded in the dark areas and showed the fur textures. They chose their favorite color and used water color washes to finish.

Artist Portraits, teen class

So the challenge to the students was to choose an artist and use some of the artists work to support the artist portrait they would paint. Again, wow! Lots of thought and great ideas. Some used traditional artists, animators and an artistic friend. More to follow as the rest of the class finishes!

Paper Flower Wreaths, ages 7 - 12

The students used scrapbook paper and card stock to create layered flowers and then glued onto cardboard cake disks with the center cut out. These made wonderful Mothers Day gifts this year!!!

Look closely and you will see that some of the flowers have some great 3-d effects.
