Super Hero Posters, ages 8 - 11

We listed some super hero qualities on the blackboard... cape, super powers... and talked about logo's, like the one on Superman's chest. (symbols that are identified with a company... they all got the example of the golden arches!) Then the students did some thumbnails of superheroes they could be or identify with. Tweaked the ideas and did the final on 17 by 23 inch card stock with markers.

Feathers and Stitches, ages 12 and up

The class was given peacock feathers and photos to look at and do thumbnails to get to know the subject. Some of the class chose to do paintings on canvas with embroidery thread embellishments, some chose to use beads and one did a colored pencil drawing.

and here is a Peep that one of the students did as extra.

Matisse inspired Peeps, ages 8 to 11

We talked about Henri Matisse and the shapes, colors and techniques he used. We looked at some of his work and used one of his images as inspiration for our Matisse inspired Peeps.
Acrylic on 9x12 inch canvas board.

Quilted Critters, ages 8 t0 11

Looking at insects, animals... and breaking them down into shapes is an interesting project.  Then learning how to soften edges with watercolor to get a quilted feel is next. Add some patterns, take some marker to outline in stitches... Sometimes the techniques the students learn can be simple, but with fun results.

Animals and a Square, ages 8 to 11

Oil pastel on 18 x 24 inch canson paper is what the students used to draw an animal. It was important to have the animal coming out of the square/rectangular base as an added element. The students always do a nice job with oil pastels.

Magazine and Beyond, ages 8 to 11

This is another favorite project. The students take magazine pictures cut them out, glue on canvas board and create a new environment in acrylic paint. Many fun and unexpected scenes.
